Turnover of the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria.

چکیده
Previous observations (MUCK, J., AND GLASER, L., Biothem. Biophys. Res. Commun., 39, 699 (1970)) on the turnover of the cell wall of Bacillus subfilis W-23 during logarithmic growth have been extended to show that (a) freshly synthesized wall does not become available for turnover for about one-half to one generation; (b) the turnover rates of the cell wall mucopeptide and cell wall teichoic acid are identical; (c) the products of cell wall turnover can be isolated from the growth medium and are the products of cell wall cleavage by an IV-acetyhnuramyl-L-alanine amidase. Cell wall turnover has also been observed in Bacillus megaferium strain KM in logarithmic growth phase. Preliminary studies with inhibitors suggest that turnover is dependent on new cell wall deposition. The implications of these observations for the mechanism of cell wall growth are discussed.

Mechanical consequences of cell-wall turnover in the elongation of a Gram-positive bacterium.
A common feature of walled organisms is their exposure to osmotic forces that challenge the mechanical integrity of cells while driving elongation. Most bacteria rely on their cell wall to bear osmotic stress and determine cell shape. Wall thickness can vary greatly among species, with Gram-positive bacteria having a thicker wall than Gram-negative bacteria. How wall dimensions and mechanical p...

Abstract Background: Presence of the beta-lactamase enzyme results in microbial resistance to beta-lactam and cell wall synthesis inhibitor antibiotics. This study was conducted to compare effects of Calendula officinalis extract and cephalosporines, as a cell wall synthesis inhibitor antibiotic, on bacteria isolated from patients with cellulitis. Methods: This experimental study was done o...
متن کاملPetra, osiris and molinspiration: A computational bioinformatic platform for experimental in vitro antibacterial activity of annulated uracil derivatives
Annulated pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidine/pyrano[2,3-d]uracil derivatives were synthesized using aromatic aldehydes, active methylene compounds and barbituric acid in presence of dibutylamine (DBA) catalyst in ethanol as solvent. The different substituents on phenyl ring in the fused pyrano uracil skeleton showed productive influence on its antimicrobial activity against some gram positive and gram neg...
متن کاملOn the origin of membrane vesicles in gram-negative bacteria.
It is proposed that the genesis of extracellular membrane vesicles in Gram-negative bacteria is a result of cell wall turnover. Peptidoglycan turnover would cause a turgor on the outer membrane, causing the outer membrane to bulge and finally bleb. Mechanical motion would then shear the blebs into the culture medium.
متن کاملPromotion of Intestinal Epithelial Cell Turnover by Commensal Bacteria: Role of Short-Chain Fatty Acids
The life span of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) is short (3-5 days), and its regulation is thought to be important for homeostasis of the intestinal epithelium. We have now investigated the role of commensal bacteria in regulation of IEC turnover in the small intestine. The proliferative activity of IECs in intestinal crypts as well as the migration of these cells along the crypt-villus axi...
